Two Waterford-based charities have benefited from the annual Mayor’s Ball, held in April 2007, which was sponsored by Waterford Airport.

The Waterford branch of Multiple Sclerosis Ireland, and the Waterford Hospice Association have both benefited from money raised at the much-anticipated annual event.

The Mayor’s Ball raised a total of €65,000 for these charities, beating the Mayor’s target of €60,000.

The Ball was held in the Tower Hotel in Waterford city centre, and included guest appearances by singers Ritchie Hayes and Tony Kenny, with music by Brass and co. However, the highlight of the evening was definitely the charity auction, with Des Purcell wielding the gavel.

A range of money-can’t-buy prizes were on offer during the auction, including Waterford Crystal replicas of the Sam Maguire and McCarthy cups, and tickets to the football and hurling finals with accommodation in the Tower Hotel Group’s Castleknock Country Club.

Other prizes on offer included a number of football and rugby signed jerseys, tickets to the Heineken World Cup, with Aer Arann flights and accommodation included. Also up for auction was a patchwork quilt, and an original painting by Ferns artist, Rita Lett.

Waterford Airport was a joint sponsor of the evening, along with Shercon Construction and Heineken.

“This was a great event to be involved in”, said Airport Chief Executive, Graham Doyle. “It’s one of the most eagerly anticipated social events in the Waterford calendar, and raises money for two very well-deserving local charities. The Airport is committed to working within Waterford, and sponsoring this event is a great way to contribute to the local community.”
